how long 'til our souls get it right?

i spent the bulk of the weekend making a video for rEVOLUTION, and it was one of the hardest things i've ever done. there was lots of crying involved. no, not because i had to go all the way back to the garageband original copy and remaster the whole song. not because i'm still so new at this video editing that i have to redo every step about 50 times before i get it right. not even because i'm working on 3.5 hours of sleep in an attempt to get this thing uploaded before Monday.

no, it was miserable, because to make this video i waded chest deep through the mire of hatred and ignorance that anyone can find simply by searching for the words "fight", "bomb", or "war" on youtube. i watched gang members brutally beat each other while others stood around and cheered. i watched napalm bombs falling on rural homes in viet nam, knowing full well that human beings were killed in the moment of the taping. i watched a reenactment of the atomic explosion at hiroshima, reproduced with alarming clarity to every detail. there was much weeping at the atrocities we perpetrate on one another in the name of God, and country, and honor.

but, i also watched the dalai lama, and mahatma ghandi and cesar chavez, and mother teresa, and martin luther king, jr. stand up and remind us what we really already know by living lives of non-violence in the most courageous ways possible. there was more weeping at that.
